Surrounded by the beautiful nature of northern Japan, Akita International University, AIU, is a window to the world. Unique in Japan for offering an International Liberal Arts education entirely in English, we are on the cutting edge of Japanese higher education.

AIU has many affiliated institutions around the world. Through exchanges with these schools, we expand our students' intercultural horizons. Our undergraduates spend a year studying abroad, and about a quarter of our student body is made up of exchange students from other countries. This truly international academic community, combined with state-of-the-art facilities, a diverse faculty, and innovative programs, makes it an ideal place to study.

President's Message

Akita International University, also known as AIU, is a liberal arts institution with a student population of about 800. Located in Akita prefecture on the northern seaboard of the main island of Japan, we provide each international student with a rigorous academic curriculum as well as the opportunity to experience and understand the people and culture of Japan through extracurricular activities.
