Japanese Language
The Japanese language courses are divided into four levels: Elementary, Intermediate, Higher-Intermediate, and Advanced. All courses are conducted in small classes with utmost individual attention. Levels are determined based upon the result of a placement test at the beginning of each semester.
Students have opportunities to develop their overall proficiency by studying "Core Courses," while "Skill Courses" enable students to improve specific skill areas, such as grammar, kanji, reading, pronunciation, or translation. Course work is supplemented by extracurricular activities and by group projects with fellow students of diverse cultural backgrounds. By learning both the language and culture of Japan, you will be exposed to a total language-learning experience to appreciate the language in its proper context.

Our Japanese language instructors, all Japanese natives with years of teaching experience, are willing to assist students not only in learning the Japanese language but also in understanding Japanese culture and society as a whole. Although taking Japanese language course is not mandatory at AIU, it is strongly encouraged. Students who decide to take both the Japanese language courses and the Japan Studies courses can take the fullest advantage of their study abroad experience in Japan.
