Library Regulations

Library Card

To use the library, a Library Card is necessary. AIU Students, faculty and Staff can use their ID Cards as Library Cards. Non-AIU members can apply for Library Cards at the Reference Desk.

Materials in the open-shelf room are available for use in the library. (When using materials in the library, please return them to the book cart after use.) Materials in the closed-shelf room may be made available upon request at the reference desk

Search of Books

Books in the open-shelf room in English are classified by the Library of Congress Classification system (LC). Books in Japanese are classified by the Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC) system. Library materials can be searched through six Online Public Access Catalogs (OPAC) available in the library or via the Internet on any other computer.

Returning Items

Return all materials at the Reference Desk. When the Reference Desk is closed, use the book drop box at the entrance.

Overdue materials

If you fail to return books by the due date, you will have your borrowing privileges revoked (or suspended) from the date of prescribed due date. The period of suspension shall be the same as the number of days that the materials were kept past the due date. When more than one item, each with different due dates are concerned, the period of suspension shall be the total of each material’s overdue dates.

Compensation for Damaged and Lost Books

If the user damages the library materials or loses them, the library has the right to demand the user to replace the same materials or any other supplementary materials. If the materials can not be restored, the library demands the appropriate fine for compensation. The penalty and/or compensation may not be applied when the damage or loss cannot be avoidable due to the special circumstances.

The compensation for damaged and/or lost books for replacement should be the original cost for a book plus processing fee of 1,000 yen for non-Japanese books and the original cost for a book for Japanese books. In case of the precious books, actual cost of the used book should be billed. Library can suggest the most appropriate means for compensation according to the levels of damage of the materials.
