Measures against the new (A/H1N1) influenza virus for AIU students

September 4, 2009

The following message has been sent to all AIU students:

There have not yet been any cases of A/H1N1 influenza infection among AIU faculty, staff, and students, since we are currently welcoming a group of new students, it is conceivable that there may be an infection in the future.

Should there be a case of infection, you are asked to take the following steps to prevent the spread of influenza both on and off campus.

To prevent spread of infection

    1. Hand sanitizing gel is placed in various locations around campus. Please use it to sanitize your hands frequently.
    2. If you have a fever or feel unwell, please consult the nurse’s office immediately.

Institutional measures

    1. If you experience, a fever over 37.5℃, coughing, chills, vomiting, muscle pain, or other influenza symptoms, please consult the nurse immediately.
    2. Anyone with any of the above systems must be examined immediately at the designated medical institution. Inform the Student Affairs Division or the AIU Nurse immediately who will contact a medical institution in advance of your examination. When you go to your examination, wear a mask (available from the nurse or residence hall staff).
    3. If you have a fever in the middle of the night, drink plenty of fluids, chill your head with a cold compress, and seek medical attention the following day. The residence hall office has thermometers and cold compresses available. Please use them if necessary.
    4. If you are diagnosed as having H1N1 influenza (just as if you are diagnosed with normal Type-A influenza), contact either the Student Services Division or the nurse’s office immediately.

Life in Komachi Hall and Student Apartments

    1. In general, if diagnosed with H1N1 Influenza, you are requested to remain in your home for at least 2 days after your fever has subsided, or 7 days after the first appearance of symptoms such as fever and cough.
    2. If a student in a double-occupancy room is diagnosed with influenza, as much as possible, he or she will be moved to another room for the duration of the illness.
    3. The administration office will inform a student’s teachers if he or she is diagnosed with influenza. Students should not go to class and stay in their rooms for 7 days after the diagnosis. Students should contact their professors directly as well to inform them of their illness.
