Tamkang University Students Ready to Experience Japan!

January 29, 2010

On January 26, Akita International University welcomed a group of twenty students and two professors from one of its partner institutions, Tamkang University, in Taiwan. The primary purpose of their visit is to take an intensive Japanese language program at Akita International University, while deepening their understanding of Japanese culture through activities and field trips in Akita city and in Oga city. The group will stay with us until February 5, 2010.

A welcome party was held on January 27, and more than 100 Japanese and international students gathered to greet each other. A music performance was presented by the instructors of the Japanese language program, inviting cheers and laughter from the audience. Then, the venue exploded into applause!

Also presented in the party was the Tenjin Ayatori, traditional performing arts combined with music and dancing, a local practice in Akita. Students from Taiwan seemed to enjoy the truly international atmosphere of the university coupled with the unique performances that are stock in trade of people in the AIU community.

On January 28, all of the participants experienced Aikido, a Japanese martial arts, and still a series of activities await their excitement. Most of these students from Taiwan have not had much exposure to snow in their life, so a “Snowman Contest” will be held on February 2.

Although Akita is in the midst of the coldest season of the year, students, faculty and staff members are all hoping that the group will create warmest memories by staying in Akita.
