The Spring 2010 Matriculation Ceremony

The hour-long matriculation ceremony included an address from Dr. Mineo Nakajima, the president of Akita International University, a speech from Norihisa Satake, the governor of Akita prefecture, and Mieko Oda, a member of the Akita Prefecture Assembly. Special Lecturer Reiko Watanabe greeted the new students with a violin concert, and Shu Shinhori, spoke as a representative of the matriculating class.

President Nakajima celebrates new students’ matriculation by calling out their names.

Following the ceremony, there was a welcome reception in the cafeteria, where students had the opportunity to mingle with their future classmates.

The matriculation ceremony is the culmination of Akita International University’s new student orientation program. Started on April 1, the one-week program helps students adjust to their new lives at Akita International University, learn about its academic programs, and get to know faculty, staff, and fellow students.

Some of the most popular orientation activities are the ice breaking sessions which help students find new friends and learn about their new environment. This year’s orientation program featured a photo scavenger hunt, international trivia contest, welcome dinner organized by students, and pizza party with English for Academic Purposes (EAP) faculty.
