Akita International University Welcomes 193 New Students

September 2, 2010

On September 1, 2010, 26 new undergraduate students, 25 new graduate students, and 142 new international students joined the Akita International University community. The new international students come to AIU from universities in 24 countries and regions around the world.

The matriculation ceremony featured greetings from Dr. Mineo Nakajima, president of AIU, and Mr. Takashi Nakano, Vice Governor of Akita Prefecture. Select Professor Reiko Watanabe treated the audience to a performance of Eugène Ysaÿe's Sonata for violin solo, Op.27, No.6.

Mr. Sho Kato, a representative of the undergraduate class gave an address where he discussed his aspirations for his studies at AIU.

I was eager to be admitted to AIU because I wanted to learn about world culture and the relationship between Japanese culture and world cultures at this university. At AIU, one can communicate with students and professors from different countries and cultures. AIU is very attractive because, after all, deep understanding of one’s own culture can only evolve by comparing it with that of others. During my time at AIU, I will study hard, have hands-on experiences in the world, and share experiences with people from other cultures.
-Sho Kato

Mr. Richard Eccleston, who mariculated to the Graduate School of Global Communication and Language's English Language Teaching Practices Program, spoke on behalf of the incoming graduate students. Mr. Eccleston studied at AIU before from 2007 to 2008 as an undergraduate exchange student from The University of Leeds. He explained how his past experiences here motivated him to pursue teaching professionally.

During my year in Akita I was able to get valuable experience teaching English at kindergartens, primary schools, and junior high schools. I found it enjoyable and hugely rewarding to help to teach English with the students, which helped me to decide to focus on English teaching for my career in Japan.
-Richard Eccleston

We wish the new matriculants all the best for their time here at Akita International University!
