It is no use crying over spilt milk…
Having been badly hit by earthquakes, tsunamis, and the subsequent radiation disaster, many universities and colleges in Japan, especially those located in the north, were quite at a loss, wondering if they could ever receive many international students again on their campuses. Akita International University was not an exception.
Before March 11, AIU was planning to welcome 145 international students (84 new students and 61 continuing students) in the Spring Semester of 2011. The actual number in Spring 2011, however, turned out to be only 70 (29 new students and 41 continuing students) due to waves of cancellations, or postponement of their first semester, in the aftermath of the earthquakes.
Slowly, however, the sun seems to be rising again. AIU is pleased to announce that it will welcome 128 international students in the Fall Semester of 2011 (as of August 23). Of those 128 students, 119 are new while the remaining nine students have extended their stay from Spring 2011.
The following chart illustrates the number of international students in the Fall Semester of 2011:

Those international students who will study at AIU in the Fall Semester of 2011, enjoy your stay. We would appreciate it if you would keep in close touch with your families and friends back home, and faculty and staff members of your home institutions, to convey the peaceful and safe environment in Akita and how you feel about studying at AIU.
With those courageous international and local students who trusted us, AIU is determined to once again start walking on the path of intercultural understanding.
